In the oil and gas industry, equipment malfunction or failure may occur due to the erosion pipe walls. Pipe bends are commonly used to change the flow direction in gas pipelines. Production of sand in gas pipelines is one of the major causes of erosion, where the distribution of the solid particles changes due to an abrupt diversion of the encompassing fluid flow. As it can be challenging to study the occurrence and effects of erosion through physical experiments, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation offers a practical approach to obtain detailed information in terms of flow and erosion distributions. In addition, full-scale pipelines can be modelled using CFD software to avoid having scale effects. Engineers can greatly reduce the time, effort, and costs for R&D with the help of simulation.
